Before the Move
- Keep an open dialogue with your parents. Let them know if you're angry, excited, or frustrated.
- Be kind and patient with your parents. Moving is tough on them too!
- Plan a "going away party" and invite your old friends. Tell each one to bring a special picture for the scrap book you'll be making and have them write a humorous note in the book next to their picture. You may even want to make a home movie of the party.
- Look at this move as a new beginning and exciting adventure.
- Try to visit your new school before your first day. If that isn't possible, see if you can get a class schedule and familiarize yourself with the extracurricular activities.
- Ask lots of questions about your new home town. Your new classmates will be happy to show you around.
- Share some of your experiences of your old hometown with your new friends.
- If you move during the summer, try to get a job where many of the kids your age hang out.
- Keep a sense of humor and look at this move as an adventure.
- Just be yourself!
